A stainless steel wafer check valve prevents backflow in a piping system by using a disc or flap that is mounted on a hinge or held in place by a spring. The disc or flap is positioned in such a way that it can swing or lift in one direction, allowing fluid to flow through the valve, but is held closed when fluid tries to flow in the opposite direction.

When the fluid in the piping system is flowing in the forward direction, the pressure of the fluid pushes the disc or flap open, allowing the fluid to pass through the valve with minimal resistance. However, when the fluid flow reverses or slows down, the pressure of the fluid decreases, and the disc or flap swings back into place, closing the valve and preventing backflow of the fluid.
